3 Weeks Out -- Taper Time

I can officially say that I am tapering! My weekend was filled with high quality workouts that I am sure will help me at Ironman. But first...Friday night I went to the State Fair with my family. I grew up showing horses and the fair is very special to my mom and I. I did a fairly descent job controlling my trans fat intake. I had a 1/2 tenderloin (my favorite), corn on the cob (also my favorite) and a pineapple whip ice cream cone (it just sounded good). This was my nephew Kaidens first experience with anything like this and it was too cute to watch him interact with the farm animals and the tractors.

I woke up Saturday morning and did a 5 mile running race that started down the street. How convenient! I drove over there b/c I had so much stuff. Of course I had to run for a 1/2 hour before and after the race so I needed to carry some extra fuel. The race went great. I didn't have a super fast time, but I was happy with my 7 minute mile pace. It felt awesome so run hard and it was a beautiful day out. It was one of those days that us runners live for! After the race I ran home and rescued my dog Lola. We ran back to the race and did a loop around the park and waited for awards. I will probaly remember this morning for a long time. Everything was perfect.

Unfortunately Saturday evening did not go so well. I try to babysit some to help pay for races and I had a babysitting job on Saturday night. They didn't get home until 2:00AM! I probably should have told them that I had to be up at 5am to leave for Louisville for my last ultra-long training day. I was sitting in their kitchen, tears in my eyes and I didn't know what to do. I kept thinking that they would be home any minute, but that minute never came. Finally...they walked through the door and I looked a bloody wreck! I came home and slept from about 3am-5am and Patrick (fromt he time trial) came to pick me up at 6am. I slept the entire way down there and I felt okay despite the cirmustances.
We had an amazing ride. I made peace with the course that has haunted me all summer. We had a beautiful day with low humidity and there were tons of triathletes out getting in their last long ride. I did really well with the hills and since I navigated us through the course, I now know it quite well. Patrick was a great riding partner. He is not used to drafting, so we both rode our own ride, usually about 25 yards apart, but it was fine. We went for a 5 mile run afterwards and he dropped me! At that point, I didn't really care. I was still gleaming from the success of the ride.

We took showers, ate dinner and talked triathlon the entire way home. It was a great experience and I feel much better about my fitness level now. I am sure the heat and humidity will be back up by August 31, but I will at least be going into this race with more confidence than I had 2 days ago.
