Oh my goodness, what a fun race! A group of us headed to sprint adventure race put on by Planet Adventure on Saturday. We took 3 teams. Team A was Matt Jourdan, Chris Dolan and myself. Team B was Jason Smith and Matt VanHoosier. Team C was Eric Armstrong, Cheryl O'dore and Chris J.
Our original plan was to keep Team A and Team B together, but as soon as the gun went off, we just took off as fast as we could and didn't look back. We started with a sprint to the boats (well, these cheap ass canoes that don't go where you want). Our boat reached land first and we rushed up on shore to start the orienteering section. There was so much mud and at one point, I was in knee deep! Matt teathers/tows me through this section so that we move faster and stay together. He is a lot taller than me, so I have to be very agile so that I don't run into stuff. We found Team B about half way through and from that point on we stayed together. We turned on the jets and sprinted to the boats, thus giving us a substantial lead.
We paddled our hearts out on the way back and I was feeling really strong. I had not picked up a paddle in a couple of months and I suprised myself. We reached land first and then proceeded to our bikes. I attached myself to Jason's bike and we hauled ass to the first trail head. It was super muddy, but I have been practicing...a lot. So, happy to report no wrecks this time! I felt like we were moving kind of slow at times on the trail, but it was important that we didn't make any navigational errors.
From there, we hopped back on the road until we came to a point where we dropped our bikes and did an adventure run. The adventure run took us to a traverse and we harnessed up and flew across the line. We got back on our bikes and flew back to the finish line.
This was a great race, with great people and I had a blast. I like the sprint distance races, but they are just practice for the longer 24+ hour races.
Speaking of, 24 hour nationals is next on the agenda. That is on the 7th, and will be whole other ball game. It will probably be the hardest thing I have EVER done! Our goal is to finish, and that is fine with me!
I will have lots of pictures to post soon.
